On your door-step - Walk or cycle from your lodge along the winding country lanes, with the spring time primroses and bluebells filling the hedgerows, and see the stunning blooms of the Hendwr Horse Chestnuts during May and June. Our printed walking guides will help you get into the Berwyn Mountains to see a range of wildlife and fabulous views. Within easy reach you could try one of the may peaks of Snowdonia form Cadr Berwyn to Snowdon its self.
Activities and Adventure - Water Sports are well catered for and in easy reach of Hendwr be it fishing, canoeing, windsurfing, sailing or white water rafting. The centres at Bala and Llangollen offer some of the best canoeing and white water rafting in the country. The leisure centres at Corwen and Bala offer indoor swimming pools.
Pony Trekking provides a wonderful way to see the beautiful Welsh countryside or you could try out mountain biking. Spectacular all weather singletrack trail centres like Coed Y Brenin and Coed Llandegla are close by. At Green Wood Forest there's something for everyoneincluding a people-powered rollercoaster or why not try the high ropes adventure at Padarn Park?
Welsh Castles and Culture - Enjoy the magnificent, medieval and evocative castles to the elegant and beautiful houses. North Wales is famous for its Castles Caernarfon, Conway, Harlech and Beaumaris are all World Heritage Sites and no visit to Wales is complete with out a trip to at least one of them. Conway also boasts Plas Mawr a wonderfully resored Elizabethan town house. Cadw looks after many of the Welsh gems such as Llangar Old Parish Church and Rug Chapel both within 5 minutes of Hendwr.
Shopping - For something different your spoilt for choice from Llangollen, famous for its International Musical Eisteddfod held each July, home to tea rooms and designer and traditional shops. Llangollen is a 15 minute drive from Hendwr and offers a steam railway, horse drawn boats on the canal, Plas Newydd Gothic house, Vale Crucis Abbey to name but a few. The medieval market town of Ruthin is a delight to wonder with hiden shops its Craft Centre nominated for the 2009 Arts Fund Prize. Betwys Y Coed, home to the world famous Swallow Falls, is a centre for walking and shoppping.
Gardens - The National Trust also has properties in North Wales with wonderful gardens from Erddig near Wrexham, to Chirk Castle and Bodnant Garden, above the Conwy Valley which boasts dramatic colours throughout the season, with fine collections of rhododendrons, magnolias and camellias in early spring, and a spectacular laburnum arch, a tunnel of golden blooms from mid May to early June. Portmeirion is situated on a private peninsula of the Snowdonia coast. It is a stunning village with wonderful gardens created by Clough Williams-Ellis a World renouned architect. The national gardens scheme is acitve in the area with many smaller but just as wonderful gardens open through out the year for you to visit.
Railways and Heritage or just Family Fun each has something different to offer- Ffestiniog Railway - The world famous Ffestiniog railway runs from the sea at Porthmadog into the mountains. There are many other narrow gauge railways in easy reach of Hendwr including the Snowdon and Bala lake lines. You may prefer the Llangollen steam railway which runs on standard guage along the Dee Valley.
Electric Mountain, Llanberis- Guided tours around Dinorwig Power Station deep inside the mountain. You'll discover the amazing powers of pumped storage hydro-electricity, why not try generating your own electricity!
Llangollen Wharf - A traditional narrow boat and horse drawn boat centre. Glide silently past shoals of fish in a horse drawn boat, and enjoy the wonderful scenery of the lower Dee Valley. Or take a trip on the aptly named Thomas Telford across Telford's magnificent Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.
Welsh Mountain Zoo - For a great day out a friendly, caring conservation zoo set in lovely garden surroundings high above Colwyn Bay. Also within a hours drive is the world famous Chester Zoo.
Llechwedd Slate Caverns, Blaenau Ffestiniog - Offer free surface attractions and two underground rides and that are very popular with families. The deep mine tour begins with a ride on Britain's steepest passenger railway.
King Arthur's Labyrinth, Corris - Carved into the accent rocks a labyrinth of tunnels and caverns hides. Tales of the deeds of King Arthur, and other legends, are re-told as you walk through the spectacular underground settings.
And then there is always the beach! Hendwr is ideally located to reach either the north or west cost beaches with just a 45 minute car journey to wonderful sandy beaches.
